These prints by The Black Apple make me smile!!!
In fact lots of things have made me smile lately, life is changing......

One of the major things is I finally took the plunge and applied for a scholarship to undertake my PhD studies. And I got accepted!! So I'm going to be starting a new chapter in my life, I'll be a student again and doing my PhD in a couple of months.

What I wanted to do next in my career has been something I've been trying to figure out for awhile now, I kept tossing up in my head what I wanted and where I wanted to go. Did I want to pursue blogging as a full time job or was my heart with science, I even thought about what it would be like to just give it all up, do nothing. Blogging is something I have truley thrown myself into over the last 5 years, but truth is it is not what it was 5 years ago.  I spent a long time talking with those I love, reflecting, thinking, imagining, dreaming and asking people who'd done a PhD what you have to do and what it is like. Not everyone had a positive story to tell, many told me it can be a long hard slog and you have to really want to get to the finish line, others told me it is fun and self indulgent and they'd do it all again.

Over Christmas some of you might remember I took a big break and spent time traveling around and visiting all my friends and family. It was the longest break I had taken in over six years!! I mostly took it to really look inward and think about what is going to come next. It was during that time I made the decision that a PhD is something I want to do, for myself, personal growth and for my future. I applied a month ago and was really lucky to get accepted.  I was actually rather schocked because I didn't believe Id get in first go. After spending a few days letting the news sink in and now I've had time to process the fact I am going to be a student again. I've felt so much excitment and really ready and eager to get started pursuing my passion for science and knowledge.

So what does this mean for the blog?   Honestly I'm not sure, I guess it will just grow with me...just like it has over the past 5 years. This blog has been a journey and I dont think that journey is over yet.

Thank you to all my amazing readers, you guys have been here with me through the last 5 years, YOU'RE the BEES KNEES!!
xx
PS. I've been working on a new layout behind the scenes, I'm looking forward to it all being ready. Hopefully in July!!

  7. Congratulations! That is so exciting - what sort of science are you studying? I'm in my first year of postgrad at the moment and am seriously considering doing my PhD sometime down the track. I'd love to hear a bit about yours on the blog :)

  8. @Courtney ~ thanks lovely :) oh well done on pursuing post grad studies! my background is in computer science & stats and I've been working on applied problems in water research, from flooding to monitoring. So I most likely will continue in this area :) but the first year of a PhD you spend exploring your proposed research area and coming up with a plan. anything could happen haha!!

  10. Your the Bee's Knee's, Liss! I think it is completely healthy to keep both going, despite the fact they may seem like polar opposites. I love my PhD research but I also love more creative pursuits, which I channel through my blog. I think it's healthy to try & maintain a balance.
All the best & good luck with your studies!

  19. OMG, congrats, I'm really happy with you :) What do you study? Full time job as blogging is like a dream. I also love bloggin and doing this. Not many people read my blog, but I love doing it tho. Your blog is very special and you deserve doing it as a job :)! You know, I'm thinking about my life lately. I'm 21 and because of some reasons I finished high school now ( I was in coma for a year ). Now, I should go to University. We don't have interesting universitites too much in Poland and I really have no idea what to do. I'd love to do something creative in the future and also have a degree cus it's very important. my dream is moving out and leaving Poland cus I hate this place, but unfortunatelly I'm not brave. My life is complicated and confusing but you know, I still like it tho. I have no idea what future brings and what I'll do. I know that next year I will spend at home doing nothing cus I don't have money for studying. I need to earn them so this is why I want to start a bussiness first. I'm really jealous of your life and I admire you for things you do.
What about blog. You still can run it, you know, you can do it. Post less but post.
    I belive in you!

  23. That's awesome, congratulations! I'm about to defend in August. I'm super interested to know what you will be doing your PhD in! I'll be heading back home (Brisbane) in September and looking for a post-doc position now. If not in Brisbane, maybe I head to Melbourne! Good luck with everything!

  24. @anne louise ~ I was so lucky to be able to skip from bachelors straight to PhD, originally I thought Id need to do masters first, but Ive been working as a Research Assistant for many years so I think this helped. You should absolutely apply, and dont give up!! if you don't get in first go, figure out why and try again. :)

@laura ~ Im sure I will be still around :) Daydream Lily is my creative baby and its not like creativity just goes away. Ill find other things to cut back on...hehe like email / facebook / twitter

@Just L ~ oh congratulations!!!! Where did you do your PhD? I dont think we have to defend here, as far as I know I have to propose my research plan in a year and defend then, and then I do the research / thesis and submit the thesis it gets reviewed and I might have to rewrite bits (extremely simplified version). At the moment It looking to be in statistical methods for water research and monitoring, main component will be in computer science as thats my background but new technologies for water protection. But anything could happy....the plan could change!! I've also got an interest in epidemiology studies and eHealth. but the core component is comp sci. So excited for a post-docs too!! would love to hear about how your PhD is going. and what post docs you will go for.

  25. Wow! Such an exciting new chapter in your life! Congratulations on the scholarship offer, that's a great achievement :)

I worked on my English PhD for nearly four years, and while I didn't finish (I left to become a librarian), I have some great memories of that time in academia. It's such a great experience being part of university culture, seeing guest speakers and travelling to conferences! I'm hoping to combine the two someday and work as a university librarian.

I can't wait to see your new blog design too!

  26. Thank you!! I think I will feel better once it is all over though! I'm in Dresden in Germany and my PhD concentrated on improving transplantation of the insulin-producing cells of the body for type 1 diabetic patients (for the nerd in you, I have a research website: http://daniellejborg.wordpress.com/).

You've picked a great field to research to get into! It's really exciting that you have the chance to potentially design new technologies and improve people's health (epidemiology of diseases is also v. interesting). I'm happy to chat further about PhD stuff, if you have any PhD related concerns/questions etc any time. You can shoot my an email, my contact details are on my website or just let me know how I contact you.

  27. You've gone far and congratulations for going further! Don't stop, keep it on. I'm like three years away from finishing my degree and you're already on your PhD and this blog and your little boutique and the name you've made for yourself. Don't you think you're a little bit greater now? xx
